NELA (New England Leather Accessories, Inc.) started business in 1972 as Bugatti. It continued under the Bugatti name until 2006 when it changed its name to New England Leather Accessories, Inc., a company which Bugatti had earlier purchased.
Terry Scheller started the business with imports from Colombia, S.A. where he had worked in the Peace Corps and U.S.A.I.D. as a consultant for a leather tannery as well as other Colombian agencies and small to medium sized businesses. From one store near Harvard Square, leather goods were made in very small Colombian companies and offered to other leather stores in Massachusetts. Terry learned how to improve leather accessories from conversations with the owner/operators of these leather stores. Within three to five years with Terry’s designs, Bugatti’s customers included leather and luggage stores across the country as well as stores which included Bloomingdales, Neiman Marcus, etc.
NELA has downsized manufacturing in its current location at 100 Condor St., Boston.
